| Customer Reviews: Ingenious Gadget -- Rack Saves Time While Canning August 11, 2010 M. Hill (U.S.A.) I have plenty of useless gadgets and hesitate before adding to my collection. That said, for a canner, this gadget is helpful and well worth the space it takes to store it. I have always struggled to retrieve the canning lids from the pot of simmering water but no more. The wooden handle remains cool so lifting it in and out of the water is safe and easy -- and the lids are now perfectly accessible.
Please note that the hang tag attached to the rack states the lids should be kept in boiling water. This is incorrect. According to the makers of the two piece canning lids, they should never be boiled before being placed on the jar to begin processing. Their instructions are to bring the water to a 180 degree simmer and to maintain that temperature. A candy thermometer works great to track the temperature.
I see no discoloring of the rack after a marathon pickle canning session. The rack was submerged in 180 degree water from 9 AM to 10 PM and it suffered no damage and worked as efficiently as I'd hoped. If in the future I experience any problems, I will update the review.
This rack would make a terrific gift for any person who cans.
Needed this years ago! August 6, 2010 Ina Hurry Works like a charm. No more picking lids up from boiling water with the magnetized stick and having them stick to each other.
NO MORE BURNED FINGERS AND STUCK TOGETHER LIDS August 1, 2010 monktonmama (Vermont) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I no longer have to suffer from burned fingers and lids that stick together though I still use the magnetic wand to remove the lids from the rack. My rack did turn blackish but I have super hard well water and neglected to put vinegar in the water when I boiled it. Nevertheless, I'm still thoroughly happy with the product.
glad I bought this June 18, 2010 ljm1180 (Tennessee) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is definitely easier to use than the magnetic wand or tongs to get lids out of water. Worth the money!
Norpro Canning Lid Rack Turns BLACK June 11, 2010 kaci (the sun) I was very disappointed in this rack. While a great concept, the rack turned black in the heated water the first time I used it. Why did it turn black? Are my lids still safe to use on my canning jars? Did some coating come off in the water? Ick. VERY disappointed in this item and still concerned about my family's safety.
