| Customer Reviews: Heavy, Quality Pan September 2, 2010 Steven Gargolinski (Boston) I've never had a pan before that I've been able to use on the stovetop and then just shove right into the oven - and it has really opened up a whole new area of cooking for me! The steaks that I've been able to make now are better than anything I've ever made before. My fiancee and I have been looking for new recipes to try out in this new pan, which is a lot of fun. It's worth noting that this thing is a BEAST though, it is very heavy and tough to move, and takes up basically an entire rack in the oven. This isn't a problem, but just worth noting. I've been very happy with this pan and would definitely recommend it!
love it August 11, 2010 Christopher Moore (Ohio, USA) love it!! this pan is rather large and heavy but i use it all the time. i love cooking potatoes in (brown in EVOO and spices and then throw the whole pan in the oven) potatoes come out crisp on the outside and nice and soft in the middle.
Excellent Skillet August 2, 2010 Philip Stone (SLC, Utah) Very good skillet. Very heavy heats evenly. Easy to clean. Food tastes better.
Just rinse it out and dry it on the stove. Turn on the heat for a minute and then let it cool.
Spray it with pam or rub it with a little cooking oil. Very best way to cook.
too thin for the size; impractical for stovetop use. July 4, 2010 ari e (New York, NY United States) I like cast iron cookware, and i'm a fan of Lodge's pre-seasoned line. But a pan doesn't just win because it's cast iron.
This skillet is huge. Yes, it's 15" across the top, contrary to the description. Yes, it's "only" 12.25" across the interior of the bottom. But that doesn't stop it from being huge.
That said, huge isn't bad. Huge is what i was going for, in fact. The problem is that, on conventional stovetops, it's too big for just one burner. If you use one burner, then the burner behind it is useless. It's also too thin to heat evenly with just one burner. I typically set it to span two burners when i'm using it, at the expense of additional gas and the loss of valuable parallel cooking potential (i.e., being able to cook more dishes simultaneously).
More useful than wasting two burners on this oversized unit would be to buy a 12" and a 10", and use both burners individually. On the other hand, if you have a gargantuan stove top and a large heat spreader, you may feel differently.
Misleading description June 21, 2010 XenaKITT (Philadelphia, PA USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have left a separate review for the poor packaging and the condition the pan was received in. I am very disappointed with the dimensions of this pan. I was expecting a 15" cooking surface. The cooking surface only measures 12 inches. If you measure across the outer lip it only measures approximately 14 1/2. This disappointment is partially due to the fact that size is apparently derived from measuring across the lips of the pan and not the cooking surface. I only learned this after doing research after receiving the pan. This pan does not measure 15 inches across though, unless you are rounding up. The pan itself, other than damage from shipping, looks handsome. If it were the size I was expecting I would be thrilled with my purchase. Unfortunately I do need that extra cooking surface, so I may need to order a larger one. I have been cooking with cast iron for a while and would suggest that everyone who enjoys cooking give cast iron a try. I have given this product a 3 star because I feel that they could have better described the cooking surface. I have not cooked with it yet but I expect that I will have good results.
