This 6QT Oval model# SCVC604H-SS self-destructed, the lid handle came off and the screw fell into our stew, so much for dinner! Customer service was great they sent us a new one (6QT Oval model#: SCVPS600-B) after two months the side-handle began to crack and today the lid handle fell off, thankfully the screw didn't fall into dinner again, it fell off as I was putting it away. Not going to buy another Rival Crock Pot, back to research to find another brand.

DO NOT BUY RIVAL CROCK POTS!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Decent cooking product, but a safety hazard!!   February 13, 2010

I bought this Crock-pot a little over a year ago and used it only about a half dozen times. It is my first slow cooker, and in my opinion does the job of slow cooking well enough.

The main reason I post is to warn consumers about potential safety hazards with this product. The last time I used it, the plastic mount that holds the lid to the hinge, melted off from the heat and went into the food!! I didn't realize it until I was eating my meal and bit down on a small sharp piece of black plastic that could have easily been swallowed causing choking or serious injury! I am glad that I got the piece and not one of my children! I have written to the company and hope to get a safer replacement.

I would recommend against purchasing this product, and be weary of plastic mounted hinged lids!

I love this cooker. It is large enough for anything I want to cook, and it works very well.

1 out of 5 stars Too hot, replaced by Crock Pot, and then the replacement fell apart!   December 2, 2009

I wish I had read the reviews about overheating here before buying this model. Sadly - and nearly tragically - I did not.

To clarify, I am a wife and mom of 4 grown kids who's been using Crock Pots and slow cookers in varying sizes and shapes for all of my adult life. We won't say how long that's been exactly, just trust me when I say it's better than 20 years.

When my first brand new Crock Pot, this model, came I eagerly unpacked it, thrilled to have the "keep warm" setting, excited to try out a new and modern crock pot after my years of hand-me-downs and recycles from family members and tag sales. I plugged it in and it immediately began smoking. When I touched the side it was so hot that I got a blister on the inside of my thumb. I immediately called Crock Pot's 800 number and was told that I could file a legal complaint against the company for damages (and get nothing) or take a new Crock Pot. I chose to go new, and here was my fatal error.

After three uses, the "new" pot they sent to replace the old - which is a quart larger than this model (the one I first called in about) - fell apart in my hands. Literally, and just about ten minutes ago. The little lift mechanism on the lid was the first to go, crumbling as I lifted it, followed by the hinge mechanism. I grabbed the very hot glass lid. Another (smaller this time) minor burn on two fingers, and my lesson is learned. I hope you can avoid learning the hard way, as I did, and steer clear of this item!

In the past I have used both Crock Pot brand and other brands of slow cooker. This is the worst experience I have ever had with any slow cooker product. If I could go less than one star, I most certainly would.

5 out of 5 stars Can't complain.   October 25, 2009

I got this for my wedding and have used it a few times for pot roast. It was delicious! I have not experienced the fast-cooking others complained of. In fact, my Mom gave her old slow cooker to my college-bound brother and wanted to borrow mine. It made a fantastic BBQ pulled pork and now we've bought her one for her birthday at her request.

Our local news channel reported that some people have had the handle come off the glass lid. I think I recall it being loose at some point, but I screwed it tight again myself, having noticed it was loose. No further problems, but I will re-tighten it in the future if I need to. Pay attention, people. If the handle is suddenly loose and turning, screw it in tight again - don't just do nothing then get mad when it pops off. I don't blame Rival for that.
