| Customer Reviews: Cool properly August 28, 2010 Gerry (Aurora, CO) I bought this canner because it had the flat bottom I needed for my smooth top stove. I used it for the first time today and it worked flawlessly. As I finished my canning I realized that I shouldn't just dump the hot water to let it cool or worse yet dump and fill immediately with cold water. The large aluminum disk on the bottom of the pot needs to cool evenly and slowly so it doesn't experience heat stresses that might cause it to warp. I left it on the turned off burner with all the water still in it. After everything was cool I dumped the water. The pot still is flat on the burner.
Love it August 28, 2010 V. Way I received this item as an incentive (for a party group that I belong to) early in the summer. I LOVE it. I had never canned before but I've canned something every week since receiving it. It is easy to use, mine came with the optional kit which I highly recommend since they make things a lot easier (funnel, a thing to transfer hot jars with, a magnetic rod to retrieve lids with, etc). I've made jelly, jams, butter, and canned tons of tomatoes and peppers that I've grown this summer. I'll be using this item a lot in the future also. I can't say how fast it arrived since I didn't get it from Amazon but I have ordered a lot of other stuff from them over the years and I've never had a problem that they didn't fix immediately.
Excellent Product August 25, 2010 GSP (Central Massachusetts) This is a great canner. I read the reviews and decided that I would give it a try. I noticed that someone else who had bought the canner had trouble getting the label off the side. There is a simple way to do that. The first time you fill it with water and put it on the stove, wait until the water is almost boiling and carefully lift one corner of the label and peal it right off. The heat softens the glue.
Got tomatoes?
short for quart jars; small handles August 24, 2010 S. Wood (NE Pennsylvania) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While this is a decent pot, there are a couple of annoyances, and a significant problem with this as a canner. The label doesn't come off cleanly, as has been said. I find the handles too small for comfort, particularly on the lid. Most importantly, there is only 2-5/8" above the top of a quart jar--really not enough to safely contain 1-2" of water and a rolling boil. This is with the rack sitting flat on the bottom (jar bottoms about 1/8" above pot bottom) which is probably not ideal for water movement. (Total depth of pot is 9-1/8" to ledge lid sits on, 9-1/2" to very top.) Yes, this is no different than the typical enamel canner, but for the cost of this thing, it ought to be a perfect canner, ~and~ make my morning coffee.
Nice canner for smooth top stoves August 20, 2010 Candace L. Dyhr (Janesville WI)
Overall, this canner works very well on smooth top stoves. The only small problem I encountered was that some of the water boils and spills over the side. It did it with both 7 quarts and 7 pints in it. The water leaves a white mark on the stove that I haven't been able to get off. Flat bottom canners are difficult to find and this one works well. It is well built and heavy so be careful if you lift it with hot water in it. It is a little pricey but at least it is well made.
Thanks to those who said to wait until the canner was hot to pull off the label. I pulled it off as the water was boiling and it came right off.
